Indonesia is one of Southeast Asia's largest consumers of imported fruit. Despite being a tropical country rich in local produce, the demand for temperate and premium fruits such as apples, grapes, pears, and berries continues to grow steadily. Behind this supply chain stands a critical player: the fruit importer.
This article explains who fruit importers in Indonesia are, how they operate, and what buyers and business partners need to know when working with them.
A fruit importer is a company licensed by the Indonesian government to bring fresh fruit from foreign markets into the country. The process involves securing import permits (Surat Persetujuan Impor / SPI), complying with phytosanitary standards, obtaining BPOM clearance where applicable, and managing customs documentation through the Directorate General of Customs and Excise.
In Indonesia, not all distributors are importers. Licensed importers must hold an Angka Pengenal Importir (API) and comply with strict traceability and halal requirements depending on the product category.
Indonesia imports fruit for several structural reasons. Temperate fruits like apples, pears, and grapes cannot be commercially grown in a tropical climate. According to Indonesia's Central Statistics Agency (BPS), the country imported approximately 689,924 tonnes of fruit in 2023, valued at USD 1.44 billion. China remains the dominant source at over 60% of total import volume, followed by Thailand and Australia.
The growth of modern retail, rising middle-class consumers, and an expanding HoReCa sector have all driven consistent year-on-year demand for imported fruit.
Importers work directly with overseas exporters and farms to secure supply agreements. Quality standards, certification requirements (such as GlobalG.A.P.), and harvest timing are all negotiated at this stage.
Fresh fruit requires strict temperature control throughout transit. Leading importers operate or partner with modern cold chain facilities refrigerated containers, cold storage warehouses, and temperature-monitored fleets to preserve product freshness from origin to end buyer.
Every shipment must pass through port inspections, quarantine checks, and customs documentation. Importers coordinate with government agencies to ensure full regulatory compliance, avoiding delays or product seizures.
After clearing customs, imported fruit is distributed to supermarkets, traditional markets, food service operators, and retail chains. National-scale importers typically maintain regional distribution hubs across Java, Sumatra, Kalimantan, and Eastern Indonesia.
If you are a retailer, supermarket chain, or HoReCa operator looking for a fruit import partner in Indonesia, consider the following: valid API and SPI licenses, modern cold chain infrastructure, proven track record with premium fruit categories, wide national distribution network, and compliance with halal and food safety certifications.
Several established companies operate at a national scale, including PT Laris Manis Utama (LMU), PT Sewu Segar Nusantara, and PT Indofresh. These companies hold official import licenses, manage large cold chain networks, and supply to major retail and HoReCa channels.
The most commonly imported fruits include apples (primarily from China and the US), grapes (from China, Chile, and Peru), pears (from China), mandarin oranges (from China), kiwi (from New Zealand and Chile), and strawberries and blueberries (from the US and Europe).
Fresh, unprocessed fruit generally does not require halal certification. However, processed or value-added fruit products such as dried fruit, fruit snacks, or packaged fruit may require halal certification from the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) before distribution.
PT Laris Manis Utama (LMU) has been one of Indonesia's most trusted fresh fruit importers and food distributors since 1986.
